When this three-year-old ran by, they thought he was playing, but his mother saw blood. Like most three-year-olds, Jackson Lopez loves to play. So, one day, when he ran into the neighbor’s yard while someone was picking him up from his grandmother’s house, his mother didn’t think anything of it. However, she then heard his cries for help and when she saw blood, she realized exactly what her young son was doing. Kelsey Sprouse works at MD Express as a nurse.
She lives in Gloucester, Virginia and has been engaged to Daniel Lopez since September 2014. Together they have two young sons, three-year-old Jackson and one-year-old Landon. Like most young children, three-year-old Jackson has an inquisitive mind. He doesn’t stay in one place for too long and sometimes wanders off to explore under the watchful eye of his mother. Of course, one day his curiosity led him to the neighbor’s yard.
It was February 4, 2017. Jackson was at his grandmother’s house in Gloucester on that cold winter day, and his mother Kelsea had then arrived to pick him up. Then, as she carried a basket of clothes to load into the car, her son followed her outside. Any other day, Kelsey would have sent her son inside since he didn’t have a coat with him.
However, that day, for some reason, she didn’t even realize it. “I didn’t think twice about it,” she later told News 3 on WTKR. “He just walked me to the car. » Then, despite wearing Minion headphones, Kelsey heard her son’s voice, “Help, help,” she thought she was saying. Nonetheless, she brushed it off as if he was simply repeating something he may have heard on television that morning. But the next thing she knew, Jackson had run off into the neighbor’s yard.
Naturally, as her son ran away, Kelsey became more concerned, so she asked, “Does anyone need help?” » Then she heard a noise coming from the neighbor’s garage. And even though the response was barely audible, it was enough to catch the mother’s attention. Now Kelsey was beginning to realize what was happening. She saw the neighbor on the floor of his garage. There is no doubt that Kelsey’s nursing training also came in handy, as she immediately recognized that the lady was in trouble. Indeed, she was bleeding and needed help quickly. Sprouse probably called 9-1-1.
Meanwhile, she asked her son to return to his grandmother for help. Jackson then ran next door and started banging on the door. “He says, ‘Danny neighbor, help!’ And he grabs my wrist and pulls me towards the door,” his grandmother Danette Lopez later recalled. Luckily, the three-year-old knew what to do next. “I think he’s playing, because nothing like this has ever happened,” but Jackson, of course, wasn’t playing. His neighbor needed help immediately.
Danette then remembers that her neighbor was not well at the start of the week, and what’s more, that morning, the neighbor had woken up even worse. She then tried to go downstairs to call for help, but as she reached her kitchen, things got worse. What happened? The neighbor fell when she got to the kitchen, hitting her head in the process.
However, still conscious, she managed to drag herself to the garage where she began screaming for help. And having spotted her lying bleeding on the ground, young Jackson then alerted his mother. An ambulance then arrived and took the neighbor to a nearby hospital where she was treated for severe dehydration. Fortunately, she recovered quickly and returned home soon.
Unable to return to work, and all thanks to Jackson’s vigilance. With her nursing background, Kelsey felt it should have been her job to recognize when someone needed medical help. However, on this remarkable day, it was her three-year-old son who was hailed as a hero for his actions. As Danette explained, her neighbor was understandably very grateful for Jackson’s help. She says he’s her hero and she couldn’t have gotten through this without him,” Danette told News 3. She said he’s still her hero.
As with all superheroes, the boy’s actions were selfless. He didn’t do it for praise or reward. So when his mother took him to the toy store to pick out a treat to reward his heroic actions, Jackson was having none of it. Instead, he wanted to do something else for his neighbor. As three-year-old Jackson himself told News 3, “I got flowers from my neighbor. » Nevertheless, Jackson’s actions did not go unrewarded.
You see, Spin Master contacted Kelsey to give the young hero a special treat. In fact, the game company arranged for the youngster to attend a live performance of his favorite TV show, Paw Patrol. Additionally, they provided him with his own private driver, from Gloucester, Virginia, to Washington, DC.
For those unfamiliar with Paw Patrol, it is an animated children’s show about a pack of dogs, each with a particular set of skills. The dogs take care of their community, Adventure Bay, fulfilling roles similar to real police officers and firefighters. In addition, each of them has a niche that transforms into an emergency vehicle. Kelsey thinks, in fact, that it was because of his love of the show that Jackson knew what to do that day when he saw his neighbor in trouble.
He shifted to a rescue mindset that he borrowed from the show. He recognized that the neighbor needed help and that he was the one who could get it. Yet no matter what inspired Jackson that day, Kelsey wants her son to realize how much he is appreciated. As the proud mom told News 3, “I just want him to know that what he did was great, and I want to continue to instill that in him.” These are the things we should teach our children. »
