Americans are turning to overseas adoption to realize their visions for their family. Although they have good intentions, they are guided by international adoption agencies to find children who need homes. An Ohio couple went through this process thinking they had found a girl who would complete their family.
Little did they know she had a terrible secret. Hello, great people. The family adopts a five-year-old girl. But when she learns to speak English, they discover the horrible truth.
When Adam And Jessica Davis decided they wanted to adopt a child, they were thrilled. They already had four children, but as they grew older, it was time to have another child. However, they didn’t think it made sense to give them another biological child when there were so many unwanted children. Nor did they need adopt a baby.
They decided to look for an agency to help them adopt internationally. The Davises began working with an Ohio-based agency called European Adoption Consultants. The agency’s goal was to give orphans the opportunity to find parents in America. This seemed like a laudable goal in the Davis family. Shortly after, the agency called to inform the couple of a girl they had located.
His name was Namata and she desperately needed a home. The agency said Namata’s father had died and her abusive mother wanted nothing to do with her. If she didn’t leave Uganda, she would have no future. Although the agency indicated there would be a $150,000 fee, the Davises decided money didn’t matter. They already considered Namita a member of the family.
They flew to Uganda to collect her, but little did they know that all was not as it seemed. It was 2015. When they met Namata, they immediately liked her. She lived in a terrible place called the Orphanage of God’s Mercy. The couple knew they had to get him away from a filthy group home. They finalized the adoption and soon returned to America with a new family member.
Adam and Jessica introduced Namata to their four children. They nicknamed her Mata. It seemed like a perfect fit. No one suspected anything was wrong. Mata quickly got used to life in the United States.
She did well in school and learned English. But as his English improved, so did his ability to communicate something important. A year later, Mata loved her new family and also had much better English skills. She began referencing her old life in details that made no sense to Adam and Jessica. She spoke about her mother, her village, her brothers and sisters and how much she loved them. This did not match Namata’s life story that was included in her adoption file.
A horrible revelation is imposed on the couple. Namata was never an orphan. She lived with a loving family and they never wanted to betray her. The family was baffled by how she ended up in the orphanage. The couple knew they had to do something, so they called Karen Riley, an activist who reunites trafficked children with their mothers.
Riley agreed that this story was that the media often ignores a great example of a trafficking sign: Riley told the Davises that she had found Namata’s mother, and they immediately set up a Skype call so she could knowing that Namata was okay. Namata’s mother experienced a heartbreaking story. The adoption agency had developed a common international adoption scam.
They arrived in the village of Namata and began offering to match the children with sponsors in the United States who would take their children to America for further education. Parents thought their children were going to school in America and would return soon. Little did they know that the agency was taking custody and selling the children to unsuspecting American families. Adam and Jessica suffered because they loved Mata, but she belonged to his family. They made the decision to bring Mata back to her family. They had an incredible reunion in Uganda.
They were delighted to see her again. They were grateful to the Davises for doing the right thing and bringing her home. European adoption consultants have been doing this for years. Unfortunately, most of the children were unable to return home. The FBI raided their office and blocked them from transferring guardianship of the children. Although they have ceased operations, other nefarious adoption agencies continue to scam people and steal their children. The Davis family performed a miracle by sending Nama home. They are committed to working with advocates like Riley to reunite more families and their children. This is a cautionary tale about working with groups demanding large sums of money with a history of child abandonment.
