While sitting alone in a cafe after being laid off, a nurse finds company in a homeless man. The next day, Olima arrives to pick her up and little does she know that her life will never be the same again. Lorraine was stupid, she really was. She tried everything she could to survive her job, and it reached a point where she couldn’t stand her arrogant boss anymore, so she told him what a jerk he was. This resulted in her being laid off, and she was now worried about how she would manage her bills since she had been living paycheck to paycheck for some time. I know it’s hard, but I had no choice. She recalled as she sat in a New York cafe, regretting her situation. Lorraine’s workplace was a few buildings away and she frequently went there after work. Outside there were straw chairs and round glass tables, each carefully furnished with a vase of flowers from a magazine. But Lorraine was too distracted that day to see how elegant it was or enjoy the hot espresso in front of her, which had long since gone cold. She worried about what she was going to do now and the grueling process she would have to go through to find a new job.
Suddenly, a weak voice interrupted his thoughts.
Please excuse me, miss. Do you mind if I take the rest of your coffee, if you don’t drink it?
I feel a little cold, said the voice.
What?
Lorraine suddenly looked up and noticed a disheveled man in front of her. From the looks of it, it didn’t take him long to realize he was homeless.
Coffee? » she asked confused.
The man noticed that Lorraine seemed lost, so he repeated himself.
Yes, coffee. Can I have it?
» he asked, pointing.
On that. Yeah, sure. I mean, I wasn’t going to have it anyway.
She replied, offering it to him.
Please join me.
The man nodded slowly as he sat down.
It’s excellent, but it wouldn’t have mattered.
It had better be hot, he said, taking a sip.
Thanks for leaving it with me. My name is Jeffrey. Lorraine Simpson, No worries, Jeffrey.
She replied. If you don’t mind, Jeffrey said, putting the cup down.
I see something is bothering you. Not that I did.
The right to.
Interfere in your own affairs, but if sharing it with me makes you feel better, I’m all ears. I’m just saying.
Lorraine smiled a little.
That’s very generous of you, Jeffrey. Thanks for asking. Honestly, I feel terrible because I lost my job. I am a nurse. My boss was causing trouble at work, so I lost my temper and yelled at him. In retaliation, he fired me, and now I don’t know what to do. I’ve been having financial problems, and lately that’s it. Getting fired is horrible in a life without money, even worse.
She cried, shaking her head, and immediately regretted it as she glanced at Jeffrey, who was looking even worse.
Sorry, I think I shared too much. I’m sorry if I offended you.
No, no, you didn’t, Jeffrey replied, waving his hands.
It’s good. I hope you do.
Feel better now that you have it out of your system.
Very much, thank you. Let me have you.
Something to eat. she offered, suddenly feeling grateful to Jeffrey for his thoughtfulness. She ordered him a tuna sandwich and a fresh batch of two cups of coffee, even though she knew he would drink more. As they talked over coffee, Lorraine felt her heart free of all its worries for a moment. During their conversation, Jeffrey laughed and said, “If that were the case.”
Your boss, I would come to you in a limousine and hire you at my medical center, or whatever they call it. I would be delighted to have you on my team. How could someone fire you?
Lorraine blushed.
That was all I needed to hear today. Thanks Jeffrey. I feel really good after talking with you.
After finishing their coffee, Jeffrey offered to walk Lorraine home. Lorraine agreed, and as they walked she noticed that Jeffrey would always be behind her at a considerable distance. She pointed this out and her cheek reddened.
You see, I’m homeless, he said. If people notice us walking.
Together.
They may not see him in the right light. Dral, I’m a bad guy.
Lorraine smiled, shook her head and held his hand.
I don’t care what other people think, she said.
To me, you are a caring man who made me feel better by listening to my concerns.
Your appearance and status are the least important thing, Jeffrey. You shouldn’t let people judge you like that. You deserve to be respected, okay?
Jeffrey nodded, tears welling up in his eyes. As they arrived at her house, Lorraine suggested that Jeffrey spend the night at her house and sleep in the guest room. But he refused, saying he didn’t want to bother her unnecessarily. Instead, he thanked her and left. He’s such a kind soul, Lorraine thought as she saw him walk away.
I should have also asked him about his concerns. How could I be so self-centered? I hope we see each other again, Jeffrey. Really.
That night, her fears came flooding back to her as she sat alone at home. She couldn’t shake the fact that she was unemployed and cried herself to sleep because of all the anxiety and worry. The next morning, she woke up to the sound of her doorbell. She hurriedly put on a sweater and rushed to open the door. She opened the door to find a man in a suit standing in front of her door and a limousine parked in front of her house. Hello, man, the man said. My name is Stewart and I will be your valet for the day. My boss can’t wait to see you. Lorraine looked at him from head to toe and sideways.
And I guess you’re at the wrong address, Mr. Stewart.
I’m afraid not, ma’am, he said. Right, Lorraine Simpson? At this point, Lorraine was completely confused. She clearly didn’t know anyone who would send a limo to pick her up, but she wanted to get to the bottom of it, so she quickly prepared herself and decided to go with the man. Fearing the worst, she punched 911 on her phone and it was just a click away. When the car stopped at one of the city’s most prestigious medical clinics and she met the owner, she knew it wasn’t necessary. Stewart worked for none other than Jeffrey. How different and elegant Jeffrey looked in his suit, she thought as Stewart opened the car door for her and she got out. Jeffrey explained that he was a psychologist disguised as a homeless man as part of a sociological experiment for his research. When he met Lorraine, he saw the fire in her eyes and decided to hire her. People know who I am, he explained. See, fame did it.
Its disadvantages.
If I approached them as a doctor they wouldn’t be honest with me and my experiment would fail so it was the only option. He offers Lorraine a job and hires her. Lorraine was beyond grateful and couldn’t believe how well things were going for her. But then, they say that kindness never goes unrewarded. Perhaps it was a way of repaying the kindness Lorraine showed to a homeless man.
