Sixth grader Abraham Walker and his brother Joe were adopted last fall by a devoted family in Charlotte, North Carolina, from Sierra Leone, West Africa.
Walker never had a birthday party before his adoption and, unfortunately, is unaware of his true age. When his new family decided to surprise him, everything changed.
When Walker’s mother first came into the kitchen with a birthday cake with lit candles, Walker was sitting at the table. Walker covered his mouth and fought back tears as the family sang “Happy Birthday” to him.
Walker understood what was happening and his face burst into joy.
He got up from his seat and ran to hug his father and mother while he continued to sob as soon as his mother placed the cake in front of him.
During a visit to an orphanage in Sierra Leone, Walker’s adoptive father got to know Walker and his brother.
The Walkers and their four children gathered together as the brothers were about to be separated and taken to the streets and decided quickly and unanimously that Abraham and Joe should join their family in America.
As Walker told TODAY: “All I prayed for was to have a family that could love me and care about me, and then God just said, ‘Wait, I have the perfect, beautiful family,’” Walker said.
It was the first of many birthday festivities Walker would host during his life. Presumably it’s a birthday he’ll never forget.
