That’s when the unimaginable happened. Jody went missing for 10 days when Doucet took the boy on a bus from Port Arthur, Texas, to Los Angeles, California. When Doucet finally let Jody call his mother collect, police traced the call to a motel in Anaheim. Jody was eventually returned to his parents, but his father, Gary, was heartbroken to learn what had happened to his son. A rape kit proved that Doucet sodomized Jody while he had her in Anaheim. The father simply could not bear this news. So he hatched a plan to get revenge on his boy.
While Doucet was being extradited, he got off a plane and drove to the airport in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with a sheriff’s escort and moving news cameras. Gary Plauche waited near a row of payphones with a snub-nosed .38 revolver in his right boot. Gary was facing the wall and talking on the phone. “There he is,” Gary whispered to his best friend Jimmy. “You’re about to hear a gunshot.” Rolling news cameras captured the powerful scene that unfolded next.
Gary Plauche was not bluffing. He grabbed his gun, turned and fired a hollow-point bullet directly into Jeff Doucet’s brain from just three feet away. He then lowered his gun and hung up. “An unidentified man shot Jeff Doucet at the airport,” the news anchor said as Gary’s wife June turned on the news at the Plauche residence. Even though June didn’t know what her husband was doing that day, hearing those words gave her a good idea. Her knees gave way and she fell backwards onto the mat.
Within 24 hours, Doucet was dead and Gary was in custody – but he wouldn’t be there long. Fortunately for Gary and perhaps surprising for all of us, a judge ruled that Gary did not pose a threat to the community, and his sentence reflected that. Gary Plauche has been released from prison. He received a seven-year suspended prison sentence, five years of probation and 300 hours of community service, which he performed at his local church, mostly cutting grass. But his family’s reaction to what he had done was perhaps worse than any time behind bars.
“You’re going to hell for this, you know that, right?” June told her husband this when she first saw him behind bars immediately after he shot Doucet.
